Relationship Rewind focuses on relationships as portrayed in movies, television, books & other forms of media

For young people who enjoy watching movies and reading books, NextStep is excited to introduce our new monthly 30-minute Radio Show/Podcast, “Relationship Rewind,” which airs on WERU-89.9 FM on the third Tuesday of each month from 4:30 – 5:00 PM (ET). The new program is about “rewinding” relationships in popular culture and breaking down behaviors that are often normalized or romanticized, but are actually based in power, control, and abuse. It’s a chance for teens and young adults to discuss, share insights, and learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy behaviors in relationships, to help with real-life experiences.

Alli Williamson, NextStep Youth Educator, is the producer and host of Relationship Rewind. “Teen dating violence education is a critical part of a young person’s education,” Alli said. “In the span of just one year, one in ten high school students reported experiencing violence in dating relationships. It’s important to teach young people what relationships look like that are based in equality and respect vs. relationships where power and control is being used. Discussing movies, books, and TV shows that are commonly seen and read by young people is a meaningful way to break down the behaviors being portrayed. We create a space where ideas may be discussed.”

Alli is currently looking for young people to be guest speakers who would be able to talk about the behaviors in the relationships that are featured and would be comfortable being recorded and having their voice broadcast on our radio show/podcast, anonymously if desired. For those who are interested in contributing without being a guest speaker, she is also looking for suggestions of movies, tv shows, books and other media to be discussed.
